That pretty much sums up how the skiing was at Alpine. It started out with some excellent grooming – this seems to be a theme this year. Our grooming crew making us lemonade every day from the lemons we leave them. It appeared they were all treated to a well deserved afternoon party today.
The FIS boys were out on Werner’s again today. That meant if you skied Wolverine you had to either brave the bumps on Face, or cross the race course. People seemed to be cooperating with the race marshalls and respectfully crossing the course without any issues. Its really fun to watch kids tip their skis up on crazy edge angles. The races continue through the weekend.
There was a newly cut road into Alpine Bowl from around Tower 19 today. This will make it easier for intermediate skiers to get into the bowl if/when they shut down Roundhouse and we only have Summit to ski. Ski school says they’re staying open for another week, but looking at the mud showing through at the top of Meadow, plus the wood chips starting to appear next to the magic carpet, there may not be beginner lessons for long – at least on the Alpine side of the hill. But there are definitely still a fair number of lessons going out this week. We’ve been seeing groups of kids still on spring break, plus the Alpine Unlimited program keeps the adult instructors busy – at least in the mornings.
Speaking of Alpine Unlimited, if you’re unfamiliar with this program, you should check it out. For $1250 (not including season pass and the price could change next season), you can take a half day group lesson every single day all season. Any level, any day – morning or afternoon. The students love it because they get a good group of people to ski with, plus excellent instructors. And as a bonus, once in a while you get to cut all the lines on a powder day. The instructors like it because there are almost always intermediate and advanced lessons to teach (the really fun lessons) and rarely do they get sent home because of a lack of business.
By lunchtime, the skiing had deteriorated as it has been every day recently. The snow gets sticky, the off-piste starts getting punchy, and it is time to head to the lake, the river, the bar or wherever. But for some folks waterskiing down the mountain is a fun pursuit. Today the one bonus was that once they pulled the racecourse, Werner’s became a pretty nice run for an hour or so.
Its looking like the warm weather continues through Saturday, slightly cooler for Sunday and the possibility for something called snow on Monday. We’ll all be confused if white stuff comes from the sky, but hopefully it stays decent for a few days afterward. Also, look for Snow Golf to return to Alpine on April 9 – always a fun time!
Today’s post courtesy of Randy. Posted overlooking the beach at PV. Temps this week have only been running about fifteen degrees warmer than Alpine Meadows….initial looks say 5-8 inches of new snow possible Monday. I’m looking forward to skiing again…
I was confused and I thought Mark was making fun of my FB titles and then I thought it must be Andy but he’s on a ski vac somewhere and so it must be Mark pretending he’s here or playing an April 1st joke cause it’s one week from the first and then at the end Randy was given credit for authorship…. and all my wondering was for naught…the first word in the title should have been my first clue…
