Do You Yewww?

Life has been a bit chaotic for me lately. But somewhere last month, our new Ikon passes arrived in the mail, only to be buried in the pile of our ADU plans, project detail sheets and sales bills from Truckee-Tahoe Lumber. But the Twitterverse reminded me this week about the latest Alterra marketing campaign revolving around the word “Yewww”. That lead to today’s post, wondering if any of you actually do “Yewww”. Well, there’s also that the weather nerds have all been suggesting a significant pattern change which should turn on the snow machine around Halloween.

I will admit, I have heard it on the slopes. There are people that like to say “Yewww”, and then there’s people my age, who are shaking their heads at the the “Do Yewww” decal that arrived in their mailbox. So am I. That said, I have also never used a single one of the Ikon pass decals they send each year.

The Urban Dictionary has multiple definitions of “Yewww”, and “Yeww” and “Yew”. The one above seems to be what the marketing department is wanting to say. It seems that this use of the word started sometime around 2017 or thereabouts – probably after appearing in some ski, snowboard or surf movie. Younger generations do seem to enjoy the word and it seems as if the Alterra marketing department is just a bit late in appropriating the word for this years campaign.

I have never yelled out “Yewww” while on skis, and I am pretty sure that most of the people I ski with have not either. But I have used that word in another context. I’m thinking of one particularly rowdy Irish bar song that my friend Phyllis sings, which has included rowdy chants of “Yewww” from the crowd during each chorus since the mid 1980’s. Time will tell if I choose to use the word while skiing this season.

Weirdly, in a total non-sequitur, the other little bit of schwag included in this years pass mailing is a couple of very beautiful coasters. They are really awesome looking. I’m guessing they put them there to appease us Boomers, as no Millenial I know has ever used a coaster. Truth be told, I have never voluntarily used a coaster either. Still, far more useful than last years scratch and sniff stickers.

Snow In The Forecast?

Man…the weather has been perfect lately. Usually at this time of year, I am all about early season snowfall and the potential for early openings for ski areas. I am not this year. We have this backyard ADU build this year and we are racing the weather. Fortunately, we have our roof scheduled for completion this week, and windows going in today. Hopefully we can get our siding done before the snow flies.

At Alpine Meadows, word on the street is that the the cable splicing is happening this week for the gondola. There is still work to be done on the Chalet project, and the snowmaking improvement projects. I am guessing that project managers there also know they have been living the charmed life with sunny skies, no rain or snow and essentially no smoke over the last few weeks.

Things look like they are about to change. The models are getting more consistent in showing a significant pattern change as we head into the last week of October. Here’s the latest run from this morning for the GFS. It’s one run, so it’s nothing to hang your hat on. But this one run does show a potential for three feet of snow by November 1st. Keeping my self honest, the model run just six hours earlier showed almost nothing.

I know I am getting the itch to go skiing, especially after 78 days straight of construction work. Still, I probably won’t say “yewww” this week. Yeah, I am a Boomer.

  1. Funny enough, I’ve exclaimed “yewww” on skis and bikes many many times, BUT I had no idea it was actually a defined Urban Dictionary term. As a marketing slogan, it seems kinda lame, but so are so many other marketing slogans. Meh.

Note: I am an Elder Millennial (or young Xennial, if you prefer), and I use coasters.

Hope the ADU work finishes up well!

  2. I’m using the coasters at my office desk. No plans for the magnet. Maybe somebody will trade it for an old school alpine meadows sticker.

  3. Look at Yewww, ts allll about Yewww
