Looking for something to do this week/weekend? It is not the easiest hike, but it is worth the effort. The Shirley Lake Trail, to the lake and back, is approximately a five-mile walk with about a 1,350 vertical foot rise. There are a number of short sections that require negotiating somewhat steep and narrow rocky slots, but nothing too difficult. The beauty of the hike is the creek that runs alongside the trail. Spring runoff is peaking at this point in time, which is creating a picturesque and loud water flow to enjoy along the way. There is still snow near and on a portion of the lake, so diving to cool off might not be such a good idea.
The tram will not be running until June 20th, so, as of today, the hike has to be a round trip. However, once the tram begins its summer session, you can hike up from the lake to High Camp and ride the tram down. According to the official Palisades Tahoe description of the hike, it is 3 miles to Shirley Lake and another 2 miles to High Camp. I do believe these figures are incorrect, as other websites show the distance between 2 and 2.5 miles to the lake and not 3 miles. The supposed vertical climb to High Camp totals approximately 2,000 feet.
There are plenty of wildflowers blooming along the way, adding bright colors to the environment.
Music on the beach in Tahoe City begins Sunday, June 15th, with the Broken Compass Bluegrass band playing between 4 and 7pm. We had a nice time last Sunday listening to a number of different groups playing at the Tahoe Joy Festival in Tahoe City. Proceeds went to the Tahoe Truckee School of Music.
Enjoy your day.
