Moving Past The Tahoe Ski Season

The last day of skiing in the Tahoe area was last Monday. Supposedly 3000 people showed up at Squaw Valley to take part in the final day of the season. I enjoyed a few runs a couple of days before the crowd showed up. Skiing was pretty good the day I went, as the weather was on the cool side, keeping the snow firm longer. Coverage was still pretty good at the higher elevations. It was even possible to ski all the way down the mountain run on the final day. If you still need to slide on snow, I believe Mammoth will remain open for another week or two.

Spring is moving toward summer in Tahoe. Mountain bike trails are becoming drier each day as remaining snow and puddles of water disappear. I rode up to Paige Meadows from the end of Rawhide and only encountered a couple of muddy spots along the way. The meadows are green, wet, and beautiful, but the mosquitoes are ferocious. Bring repellent if you are heading to any wet areas on your mountain bike or hiking tour.

We encountered a small amount of snow on the Tahoe Rim Trail riding from Tahoe City to the Nordic Center through a portion of Burton Creek State Park.

The trail to Five Lakes from the Alpine Meadows Road was just about free of snow last week. I walked most of the way to the lakes but turned around just before entering the lake basin. I assumed there would still be snow in the shaded basin. Perhaps it has now melted down enough to allow walking on the trail without climbing over mounds of snow along the way.

Temperatures are climbing this week, begging us to get onto, and perhaps into, Tahoe. Winds have been a bother lately, but they have calmed down and flattened the water on Tahoe. We have been out on the lake in our kayaks a couple of times and hope to put the paddleboard on the water later today. Non-motorized transportation is the best from my perspective.

In case anyone is looking for property in the Tahoe/Truckee area, this might be a good time to take advantage of lower prices and an increasing inventory. There are a few condominiums of different sizes on the market in Alpine Meadows and a few homes available as well, but the larger inventory of homes in all price categories can be found in the Truckee area or along the North or West Shore of Tahoe.

Enjoy your day,

Andy

  1. As always, thank you, Andy for your informative and entertaining posts! You and Mark be very well until next season.

  2. Five Lakes trail has snow as soon as you get past the sign and into the trees near the lake. But its easy to walk over the snow and climb over the few trees that have fallen. The first lake you come to has enough clear water for dogs to swim. There’s also the option to turn off the main trail just before the trees and hike up to the top of KT. I did that yesterday and it was a great hike.

  3. Through your eyes and camera I got to ski my home base again. As well as my son, who would have been skiing every day. Unfortunately, he was called home due to brain cancer. Thank you. Next year?☘️
