Alpine Meadows Day One: Surprisingly Good

  • by

Hello Skiers and Riders,

I think everyone was surprised at the skiing available at Alpine Meadows this morning.  The general consensus appeared to be that the skiing was pretty good.  Coverage is excellent until you get close to the base.  Grooming was the way it should be every day.  Wolverine, D8, Alpine Bowl, Sunspot, Blue, Green, and Red were all groomed.  In some spots it was slick and others contained death cookies, but the effort was made and that expanded the skiing area.  Much of the mountain is covered with frozen rain ruts (small) that are not much fun, but as the sun baked south facing slopes spring conditions arrived and smiles grew.

It is supposed to get below freezing at night which will allow snowmaking to proceed, a good thing for the bottom of the mountain. Alpine was operating Alpine Bowl, Roundhouse, Summit, Kangaroo, and Meadow lifts today.  Large numbers of skiers and boarders were coming down Idiots (which should help you understand the coverage).  Beaver, Estelle, and even Bernie’s were open, although I am not sure how easy it would have been coming out of Bernie’s Bowl. Folks were skiing out of Low Beaver and coming down Sister’s which was softening in the sun.
Palisades, Keyhole and other north facing slopes are pretty frozen and did not see much action today.
There was a pretty good crowd on the hill today.

Enjoy your day,

Andy Wertheim
