While one lift was spinning at Squaw, a number of people went back to Alpine Meadows to earn some of their own turns. With another 4 inches of snow overnight, the official Alpine site says 40 inches is the storm total. Evidently the word got out that the skiing was pretty excellent at Alpine, especially on the upper mountain.
One group reported counting 27 skiers ascending Blue Trail as they were coming down The Face this afternoon. That may be a record number for a pre-season day. It sure makes a guy wonder how many people would show up if Alpine started some limited operations early in the season: no rentals or lessons, a BBQ on the deck, a few park jibs, Summit lift and some patrollers. What if?
There’s a big warm up for the weekend that will certainly decrease the snow cover, then another storm is in the forecast for Halloween. As of tomorrow, Boreal opens, likely for the season. Welcome back to ski & board season.
