Supporting The True Soul Of Skiing: The Lost Sierra Hoedown Returns

We’re excited about the return of the Lost Sierra Hoedown to the Johnsville Ski Bowl on September 18th through 21st this fall. The Johnsville Ski Bowl does represent the true soul of skiing. Miners were riding ore carts uphill solely for the purpose of skiing in the early 1900’s. Several generations of families learned to ski on the Johnsville Ski Bowl poma lifts before the mountain ceased operations in 2002. Efforts to revive the Ski Bowl have shifted into high gear over the last 3 years, through the combined efforts of the Eastern Plumas Recreation District, the Plumas Ski Club, and a number of other community organizations and supporters.

There’s an odd connection between Johnsville and Squaw Valley. The Ski Bowl purchased their poma lifts from Squaw Valley back in 1965. More recently, Squaw Valley sold the old Mainline chairlift to the Ski Bowl, and installation of the lift began last fall, following the first Lost Sierra Hoedown. Construction on that lift is scheduled to continue through this summer. Eastern Plumas Recreation District chairperson Don Fregulia is confident that the hill should be operational for the upcoming season, as long as the fundraising continues to be successful, and given enough volunteer labor.

The Lost Sierra Hoedown was a huge success in its inaugural year. In addition to raising $6,000 toward the Ski Bowl, it also raised awareness about the Johnsville project all over California and Nevada. Support for the event has grown this year, attracting artists from across the country. The biggest names from last year’s hoedown will be returning, along with a slew of new artists. The event also expands to four days this year. Ticket pricing has also been simplified, with an $80 ticket giving you full access to the entire event, including onsite camping.
