The Mad Cow Is Dead

It is now pretty official that the Mad Cow Downhill is dead. I have had confirmations from a couple of different employees that the Mad Cow Downhill is definitely off for this year. At one time it was scheduled for April 15th, which was a proposed closing date some time ago. Here’s the reference in the Sierra Sun.

Most reports are that it was killed off by the SVSH legal department, concerned with liability. Given the serious incident that happened at the Red Bull Schlittentag this year, it could be true. But that doesn’t explain why Squaw still got a pond skim and Alpine gets no real spring events….except for snow golf…yawn.

It could just be that Alpine Meadows just doesn’t need any more traffic. Carrying the burden of Squaw Valley expatriates kept the mountain full last weekend. One would assume that the upcoming weekend will be as crowded or even more crowded as people go for the last lift-served turns of the season.

It’s sad to see institutions like the Mad Cow go away. What will they say is too risky next? Out of bounds skiing? Hike to terrain like Keyhole and Idiots?
