Another Report From A Long Awaited Pow Day

As my plane was landing in Denver this evening, my iPhone started going crazy with comments and pictures from Alpine Meadows today. The pictures and reports seemed to echo Andy Wertheim’s report from earlier today.

Here’s the pictures that Valleygirl sent in:

Several people reported that the rain had done some serious damage to the base before turning to snow. Areas off of Summit that had previously been reasonably safe became very sketchy. There was also a heavy enough blanket of new snow to make it very difficult to visualize where there use to be snow versus where there use to be bare rock and stumps. The lower mountain took an even harder hit, especially in off piste areas.

A friend of a friend reportedly is hospitalized tonight after hitting a submerged stump today. Be careful out there!  Clearly, we need much more snow before this season looks anything like normal. Speaking of much more snow….Aspen picked up 22″ of snow today and is expected to pick up another 18 inches or more tonight. other resorts in Colorado are reporting similar totals. It’s tough to be watching the Denver news seeing those totals that we have not seen in more than a year.

Word on the street, as expected, is no new lifts for the weekend. ABC and Yellow will run if skier and rider traffic is high.
