It Looks Like Winter

Hello skiers & riders,

It finally started snowing last night at the base of Alpine after a very wet rainy day.  Snow levels dropped to the Truckee River creating a winter wonderland of snow laden trees.  The depth at the lodge was not really all that much, but at least it looked beautiful.

I estimated 4 to 6 inches of new snow with continuing light showers until the noon hour.   We skied the lower mountain most of the morning enjoying pockets of fresh snow.  It certainly was a joy to turn on soft snow and even make fresh tracks.  We stayed on the previously groomed trails, as off piste did not look any better than it had a few days ago (i.e. the rocks remain with just a little bit of snow hiding them).  Of course there were those that ventured out all over the place ripping hole into their skis and boards.

Around 11 we headed into the cloud covering the top of Summit and made our way down Alpine Bowl.  It was not a pleasant trip through the bowl.  The upper portion was shaved off and slick and looked brown.  Maybe the problem was the poor lighting, but I enjoyed the lower mountain much more today.

A winter storm warning remains in effect until 4 am Friday morning.  At the moment we are between storm waves, but we should be getting another nice coating of new snow overnight.

Enjoy your day,

Andy Wertheim

    1. Who would guess 6″ would close the upper mountain? I felt sorry for that nice family from Down Under that had to rely on Red Dog and Resort to fill their needs. Boy that free tubing ride sounds fun….who’s in?

  1. Skied them both and feel Alpine skied better than Squaw today! The lifts are better too. Upper mountain should open tomorrow at Squaw so I think its gonna get busy quick. Wax up tonight and see ya at 9 a.m. at……sssshhh.!!
