Remember Today When You Are Out Tomorrow

It is hard to believe that tomorrow it may be raining, or perhaps just slushy drops falling from a gray sky. Today was so beautiful with a clear blue sky overhead.

Snow conditions varied from good winter snow to firmer, chalky snow to softening, sunbaked snow. I skied a run down the groomed Sherwood Run just before noon. It was a little on the slushy side, but not wet spring snow. Riding up the chair, I watched a couple of skiers coming down Sherwood Face. It may have been frozen from the day before, but the snow was soft under their skis. The turns made a swishy sound. Again, it was not wet snow but a denser, softer snow waiting for warm weather to turn it into spring corn.

The groomed runs off Summit and Roundhouse were all edgeable corduroy. I skied Pygmy Forest and lower Palisades, as well as D7. I thought the moguls in Pygmy Forest were a little firm, but lower down they softened and skied easily. D7 is filled with moguls. The upper half was pleasant enough, but the lower half was more like skiing Mt. Everest than the Sierra Foothills.

The large moguls on Expert Shortcut were in good winter condition and enjoyable to me.

My favorite run of the day was Gentian Gully. Looking downhill, I skied the left side of Gentian. Soft winter snow with moguls that did not appear as large as Mark mentioned yesterday. The very bottom of the gully was a bit firm. The area that often receives sun later in the day was just softening after turning to ice overnight.

After high winds, blizzard conditions, limited uphill capacity, and full parking lots, today was just a pleasurable morning to enjoy a beautiful day.

Enjoy your day,

  1. I had a feeling that Gentian should have been good today with the warmer temperatures. Instead I got an opportunity to take my grandson for a lap on the shiny boxes. Watching him wave to the other gondola cars was so fun. Scenic tours and lunches should be the gondola’s primary purpose in my book.

Gentian will be there another day.
