Spring Sprung Today

A potentially cloudy day with flat light that was forecast for today turned into another warm, sunny day. This afternoon, temperatures varied between 45 and 47 degrees, depending on where a skier or rider was playing on the mountain. Snow that was firm or frozen this morning turned into spring snow this afternoon. It felt like a day in late March or the beginning of April.

Before noon, areas such as Sunspot were slick. It had not been groomed, and previous skiers had smoothed out the surface as they made turns. It was not icy, and it did hold an edge, but it was slick and could easily take a person’s skis out from under them. Alpine Bowl, Wolverine, and the lower slopes were groomed overnight and skied well.

We skied Ridge Run and Bobby’s Trail off the Scott Chair before noon and found both to be firm (Ridge) and rough on the back (Bobby’s). Outer Limits and Mountain View, found off the Lakeview Chair, were already softening and just lovely. I did not go over to Sherwood today, but Mark was skiing there and reported that very good spring snow could be found on the Sherwood Face and Chute Zero (located between the Sherwood Face and South Face). It looked like it might have turned to corn snow on the south-facing slopes at Sherwood. The main Sherwood Run is getting very thin. More dirt and rocks are showing up each day, especially with this warm weather.

As you ski anywhere on the mountain, please keep your eyes out for obstacles that are popping up on many trails. You will find branches and treetops sticking through the snow. Hit one of these, and your chances of injuring your knees will increase exponentially. We have seen employees snipping the tops of trees to help avoid the knee injuries over the past few days. A big thank you to them for their tedious work.

  1. Spot on! great early afternoon @ shrAlpine. Was my first day fro m that other mountain with other legendary S.Valley longtime skier from that movie Day Dreams 👍 And yes absolutely be xtra careful for hidden obstacles, like the hidden tree branch that threw my shoe when I came back to Sqw and skied Chute 75. I was lucky as that I had slowed down and I didnt fall. So then I dug it out, stomped it w my boot and broke it deeper of than where it was sawed off prior. Catch you on KT or not cause it takes serious skills to ski these bumps at the top where the gondola is at top of Wface & 75. Catch ya later.
