What? It’s 10pm On Opening Day & Nobody Has Mentioned That Squaw Valley Opened Today?

  • by

As we have mentioned before, the pulse barely seems to be alive at UnofficialSquaw.com these days. But we’re surprised that at least Miles at Snowbrains.com or Clark at the new Tahoe ski bums site has not put up a post yet about the season opener at Squaw Valley today. Apparently it was that epic.

That’s not to say that we don’t appreciate the efforts of snowmakers, groomers and mountain employees to make what they could of what has been a challenging late fall season. Clearly there’s plenty of us that like to start our season for Thanksgiving. There’s even those of us that like our season to start around Halloween…guilty as charged.

But today I was stuck at work and only dreaming of skiing. So I started checking in with friends to send me a report and, hopefully, some pictures of the conditions at Squaw Valley today. Unfortunately, there weren’t many people I knew that went out there today, and those that did, skied a token lap or two and went back to work or Thanksgiving preparations.

For those that haven’t figured it out yet, there’s not all that much available. Officially, only one groomed trail is available off of the Gold Coast chair. Reportedly, there were two park features built. While there is some off piste skiing, the coverage is very thin. Last year, there was plenty of space to get away from the crowds. That appears to not be as easy for this season opener, depending on how fond you are of your ski or board bases. We heard the lines were long for most of the day, but that’s to be expected at Squaw Valley during a holiday period.

Updated: Apparently Squaw threw in a surprise and also ran Extrabitchin yesterday and today…the location of a couple of park features. Now @jefforriginal’s Instagram photo makes sense.

With no real pictures of our own to share, we headed to Instagram, where users were happy to share their vision of the 2013 Squaw Valley opener with the world. Kudos to those that got out there and got it today.

We can’t wait for a storm to materialize that brings more snow…it can’t come soon enough.
