As forecast, an strong east wind event has developed this evening. Here’s the graph released by the Reno office of NOAA tonight:
You’re reading that right. Wind speeds are sustained at about 90mph, with gusts as high as 120mph in the last hour. This will make it more clear why some of the mountains chose to postpone their opening past tomorrow. East winds at those speeds will often scour the upper reaches of just about every Tahoe resort. If you’re interested in checking things out on your own, check the link to the Ward Mountain sensors on our Links page….and yes, it’s still showing 63 degrees at mid-slope.
I’ve never been a fan of East Winds, especially sustained at 80+ mph the last couple hours.
Yeah, they suck…I mean blow.
One good feature of cold east winds…it’s what Boreal needs to get Accelerator going. The snow guns are permanently installed on the east side of the Accelerator main run. If they blow snow with a normal west wind, it just blows off piste. They need an east wind to blow snow onto the run. Thinking positive….
Oddly, that never occurred to me. And I worked there for nine seasons.
With those powers of observation, have you thought about applying for a job as CEO? 🙂
Hey, play nice fellas!
But on another note, KSL write to say they’ve listened and widened areas for safety vehicles. While I’m glad they’e listening, the question arises: “why didn’t all their experts think of that, and this, and that?”.
And turning radius for fire trucks and buses. And locations for medivacs, medical centers, ski patrol, Olympic dope testing and athletes areas. (Hey the kids and race teams and creche could use the athletes rooms, no?)
And why didn’t they think about the 8 mile poop pipe which’ll save them carting poop by polluting high cost rrucks.
And why disn’t they think ‘hey there’s a place on SV Rd which could park 350 cars and a few houses for employees?
And there’s sewer pipes near Shirley trailhead which aren’t big enough for KSL’s houses.
And how do you evacuate the 8th floor in a fire on Change Over Day if the fire station is miles away and the valet parking lot is full on a Friday night and on a Sunday .
And are they using the sale contract model that is so scorned by millionaires that the developers in other places dumped around 100 penthouses and condos for an average $115,000 each in fire sale? I mean these developers sold their condos after selling out to a Brit-owned US theme park lift company. Not even Merlin Entertainments wanted the condos.
So my dear Watson, whoever designs this entire project needs to walk through the plans in the shoes of the newbie with luggage at the airport all the way to the POV of the Winter Olympic Committee members.
