Same as Yesterday?

It may have been a bit warmer today, but basically it was the same as yesterday.

The day began with a cool breeze atop Summit Chair. I do not know what the temperature was at 9 am this morning, but I heard complaints from some folks regarding the cold.  Hands were curled up inside gloves, unless they were heated gloves. I did not think it was as cold this morning as it was yesterday, but I am sure it was warmer this afternoon than it was yesterday.  At noontime the deck at the chalet was filled with people sitting outside soaking up sunshine.

It was warm enough to sit outside at the Chalet

The sky was blue and clear all day.  It really was another beautiful day on and off the slopes.  Groomed runs, still the most preferred areas to ski, seem to be making people smile.  We certainly enjoyed skiing all the groomed runs off Summit in the morning hours.  Of course, corduroy was scraped off as the morning progressed, especially on Sunspot and D8, creating a slicker surface.

Sherwood was pleasant enough

After making a number of round trips off Summit Chair and Roundhouse on groomed trails, I felt the need to venture away from the lovely surface. North Peril held decent winter snow, but it was a little rough in places. It needs to be skied more and smoothed out just a little bit. The thought of trying High Traverse again came up, but a quick check with ski patrol told me to forget the idea until it really warms up significantly enough to melt the surface. I thought Medium Yellow, under High Yellow Face, was holding up well.  Firm moguls with soft snow between many of them.

Later in the morning we made a few standard runs at Sherwood, but we never left the groomed trail as South Face and Sherwood Face just looked frozen.

Sherwood was pleasant enough

Perhaps they softened later in the afternoon but had moved on by the time. Bobby’s Trail off Scott Chair was softening slowly at the noon hour.  I attempted to ski the short-treed area known as Bill’s Hide-A-Way, but the snow in the trees was not very cooperative. A little new snow on top of rough ice. By the way, this was the place that Bill hid a keg of beer to be emptied during the end-of-season ski patrol party. Thus, the name Bill’s Hide-A-Way.

Scott Chute, Our Father, Counter Weight Gully, and High Traverse were open today, but I did not ski any of them, so I cannot give you a snow condition report for these trails.  High Beaver, Estelle, and Bernie’s Bowl were close today.

Checking the Palisades App indicates that Friday they think we may receive between 3 and 4 inches of snow, and Saturday the accumulation might range from 4 to 7 inches.  Again, their app is talking about blizzard conditions with scattered thunderstorms on Friday and snow/rain with scattered thunderstorms on Saturday.  Temperatures on Friday might be between 32 degrees and 34 degrees, with Saturday just about the same.  This information is just copied from the Palisades App.

I am sure my weatherman partner will have more accurate information for the coming days.

That is about all I have to say this afternoon.

Enjoy your day,

Andy

  1. As of now there could be a bit of snow Friday evening before snow levels rise. As of today the snow levels look 8-10k over the weekend. If snow falls it will only be at the highest parts and very wet.

  2. BA 0n Open Snow begs to differ. This weekend’s AR storm is too warm.
Snow levels of 8,000 to 8,500 Friday night Snow levels as high as 10,000 ft Saturday.

    R word may apply.
