Some of us were hoping that the cold temperatures and windy conditions we have been experiencing would be eclipsed by warmer temperatures and less wind as a start to the new week. The morning was a little disappointing as the air felt colder than we expected and winds put Summit on hold for the morning hours. Winds did slow down and Summit opened, but there was still a good breeze blowing bits of ice into the faces of those that exited the top station.
Winter corduroy on Terry’s Return
The good news was that skiing this morning was on winter style corduroy. Corduroy lovers were in heaven. Non-groomed north facing slopes remained in yesterday’s condition. Moguls with very firm troughs, but softer sides and tops. Palisades, Middle Yellow Face, and Lower Yellow Gully were pretty good, but one needed to pick their way down to avoid the slick spots.
Lots of tracks in Lower Saddle from yesterday. Might not have been a smooth run down today.
I did enjoy D8 and Waterfall. They seemed have retained there winter condition. At about 11am we rode TLC over to Sherwood where the sun had not completed warming the slopes. The main Sherwood Run was still pretty firm and slippery. South Face, yes, we did traverse over to test it out. It was not pleasant. Frozen rubble from previous skiers tested our ability to complete the steep slope without losing all our fillings. However, interestingly enough, we found patches of snow that had not been tracked by previous skiers. These were soft, allowing us to make smooth turns, but they were just spread out all over the slope giving just a short break between the frozen rubble. Later in the day it may have been just lovely.
Nice turns could be made on the small smooth patches, but the rubble was jarring to say the least.
The main Sherwood Run was getting better when we left for a Lakeview tour. Outer Limits was not bad as it was just turning soft.
I am sure tomorrow will bring real spring weather. Hope is eternal.
I took a photo of the eclipse with my phone from a chair lift. This is how it came out.
Enjoy you day,
Andy
Very cool capture of the eclipse in the lens flare. Geoff had one pair of glasses and it turned into an eclipse watching party at the top of Sherwood around 11:15. Had to leave around 1130 for a vet appointment so missed much softening today…
