Happy Easter

My thought is that today was better than yesterday. Although there was more new snow on the ground yesterday morning, it was not as light and fluffy as the snow that dusted slopes this morning. I found the snow yesterday to be stiff, or more consolidated, than the snow we skied today. We only received a couple of inches of snow overnight so we cannot call today a powder day. However, I found soft snow covering moguls in the treed areas off the Scott Chair that made it feel like a light powder morning. I thought the morning snow pack was a winter pack and not a typical Easter spring surface. Under the dusting of new snow it was not icy, or just very firm, it was just pleasant.

.Seldom Slides proved to be very enjoyable. Art’s Knob did not disappoint. D7, Waterfall, Palisades, and Middle Yellow Face were all wonderful. They were filled with places to make happy turns over soft snow and through small moguls. We did not ski the upper mountain until 11:30 because a cloud seemed to be hiding it. Visibility varied from not-so-good, to okay, to sun blessed at different times during the day. The upper mountain seemed to be hiding most of the morning telling me the visibility must have been poor.

Broccoli Tree might have been hiding a Golden Egg, but we did not find one during our visit

There were Easter Egg hunts, and hints to find the golden egg, but we did not pay much attention to them. I am sure there were lots of young people enjoying the snow and perhaps the hunt for plastic eggs filled with sweet goodies.

I did spend a good amount of time thinking of those lost in the deadly avalanche that swept down an Alpine Meadows slope damaging buildings, and killing friends of mine, on this day in 1982. Too those lost in the avalanche, I will never forget you. Thank you to the Alpine Meadows Ski Patrol for keeping us all safe. We appreciate all of you.

Enjoy you day,
Andy

  1. Thanks, Andy, for the last paragraph. It is always a difficult day. Why did some of us survive, and not others? The loss of friends and workmates still haunts my dreams. But, yes, thanks to Ski Patrol and other employees for doing their best before, during, and after that day.
I’ve been on injured reserve for the last week. Hopefully I get to see you all soon again. I’m going to try tomorrow.

  2. Hi Mark, nice meeting you and your wife on Summit chair today.
Sure was a nice day. Winter conditions on the last day of March!

  3. To the skier who wass hucking off the sidecountry of Lakeview, I have some video of your backflip if you would like.
