Surprise! Today there was some really nice snow for skiers and snowboarders. A little new snow topped the early morning groomed runs making them soft and quiet. There was just enough snow, falling and laying on the ground, to increase the enjoyment of north facing slopes. We skied the lower mountain this morning. South facing slopes sported some firm ruts mixed with a little topping of new snow. They were a bit jarring, but getting better as the day moved along.
God’s Knob and Rolls and Knolls did not disappoint; however, I seem to be making more turns on these trails the past week or so, then I have made all season long. Sympathy Face offered good winter snow as did the Poultry Zone. My first turns down Ladies Slalom, Charity, Red Trail, and in Banana Chute were all on a smooth groomed surface. No complaints about these nicely groomed trails.
We made a number of runs on trails off the Scott Chair. Bobby’s, Ridge, and Seldom Slides were just fine. Bobby’s and Ridge were groomed. Seldom Slides included a nice dusting of powder mixed with skier ruts that were not frozen. We did try the lower portion of Standard, but it was not easy skiing. Firm skier tracks from prior days provided a rough ride that was not the best of the day.
I did not venture to the top today because my mates were not anxious to ski in low visibility, nor did we wander over to Sherwood or Lakeview. Thus, I have no report for you on those areas. My guess is that the skiing on the upper mountain was very good, and the skiing in the other areas was better than we thought.
We did ski around a number of trails on the lifts that we rode and found plenty of very good winter snow. There were big smiles on a couple of ladies that were skiing with me today.
The weather was mild during the time I was out skiing (between 9 and 2). Light snow showers were falling with very little wind. At this point in time, 5pm, it is snowing rather heavily.
I was standing at the top of the Scott Chair taking in this tree that just seemed interesting in it’s wind worn look.
I think tomorrow is going to be a nice powder day.
Enjoy your day,
Andy
Similar story over at Sugarbowl today Andy. We hit first chair off Disney and banged out 8 fast groomers by 10:15. The snow started coming down strong around 9:30 making for some fun carving. Definitelt flat light and even a few vertigo moments. Light crowd given that it’s Silver Belt race weekend.
We did a half dozen Summit runs midday and it was good and getting gooder. Tower 19 offered smooth new snow that added up to 3 or 4 inches of new fluff. Zero wind and decent lighting.
I did Tower 19 around 12-1:30 and it was untracked, smooth, new fluff as you say. Did may be 4 or 5 of those. Went over to lower Our Fathers/Counterweight in the final variation – not quite as smooth as Tower 19 but snow was starting to cover the tracks and bumps from past days.
