Powder Alert?

Hello Skiers and Boarders,

Grey was the color of my true loves sky this morning. Fog settled into the area overnight. It seemed to move around the ski area lifting and dropping from one area to the other. An occasional appearance of the sun increased visibility for a time, but that soon disappeared creating a flat light situation. We skied all morning. I did not really feel the lighting change much during the morning hours. However, the weather did create opportunities for us to snap interesting photos.

Randy S captured this photo that summed up that foggy feeling

This was Bob’s favorite taken from the top of Roundhouse

The good news was that it was not raining or snowing wet heavy flakes that soak into clothing. My gloves got so wet over the past couple of days that it may take the rest of the season to dry them out. The not so good news is that the snow we received yesterday did not increase the coverage enough to allow additional trails to open. We are stuck with the limited manmade snow trails available on Roundhouse and TLC. Perhaps colder temperatures forecast for the coming days will allow the snowmaking team to fill in Dance Floor and Red Trail so we have at least one other path to the bottom.

The lake was visible at times

Surface conditions this morning were firm for the first few runs. The groomed slopes froze overnight, thus the first turns did not hold an edge easily. In addition, it was noisy skiing over the firmness. After a couple of runs a softer topping appeared and the decibel level dropped to where it was acceptable. In a couple of more runs we were able to enjoy the small moguls to the skiers right of the groomed trail on TLC.

It looks like a powder morning, but it wasn’t

Early this morning, as I opened my eyes from a good nights sleep, I found myself smiling, or should I say laughing, when my phone lit up with an urgent message from Palisades Tahoe. POWDER ALERT! 7 inches of new snow on the upper mountain!!!!! I was glad to hear it snowed overnight or at least that it piled up a little yesterday. However, I wondered why I was supposed to be excited when the upper mountain at Alpine was going to be closed do to lack of snow. Was the upper mountain at the other valley going to open. Should I have been chomping at the bit to get first tracks on Gold Coast? No matter what was open for skiing at either valley it was not a powder day.

The limited slopes available today seemed busy. Perhaps skiers and boarders were using the gondola to access untracked powder at Alpine.

Enjoy your day,

Andy

  1. I got to 8 laps and declared myself done. The grooming was a bit more minimal last night, leaving the slopes a bit more crowded. It’s solid reminder that we are really in the first week of of the holiday period. As I walked out to the lot, every cabin of the B2B coming from over the hill had skis or boards visible, indicating they were occupied. Back in town, there was a lineup for brunch outside of Jax…on a Wednesday.

  2. Andy, “Grey was the color of my true loves sky” is a variation of John Jacob Nile’s famous (to some) song “Black is the color of my true loves hair”. Were you aware of that?
