Snow Showers

It has been snowing all morning in the typical snow shower pattern. Heavy snow followed by lighter snow and even a peak of sunshine. We received a few inches of new snow overnight that has added up to somewhere between six and eight inches as of early this afternoon. Winds have been relatively light although a few good gusts blew while I was riding Roundhouse.

Treeline Cirque and Roundhouse were spinning this morning even though the morning blog indicated that Roundhouse would be on windhold. The surface was soft with plenty of areas to make fresh tracks. I found lighting to be flat making it difficult for me to see variations in the terrain (I am sure it is age).

Chicken Leg, Yellow Trail, a short section of terrain between Rock Garden and the base of Alpine Bowl Chair, and Skateboard Ally were my favorite runs today. We did ski Charity, Werner’s Schuss, Boomerang, Ladies Slalom, and Gunner’s Knob all of which offered powder for making soft winter turns. There were a number of people heading out to High Yellow and over to The Face. I assume High Yellow was fun. Obstacles remain of course, but they are slowly getting covered. More snow is next weekend. I am assuming Summit will have enough snow coverage to open soon.

I just noticed that Treeline Cirque is now open to the top. Missed it! That is what I get for turning in early.

The Sugar Bowl ski area, one of my favorite areas when I was younger as my parents took us there before Alpine Meadows existed, announced that they are opening a new tubing park on December 17th. I had to chuckle when I saw this announcement as it is scheduled to open on the same day that the new Base to Base Gondola will be christened with much fanfare. I think it might be more fun to hit the tubing park than watch a ribbon cutting.

Enjoy your day,

Andy

  1. Yep, that first picture really tells the story of flat light and occasionally heavy snow showers leading to poor visibility. Sticking near trees helped a lot today. It makes me really crave some days in Gentian Gully, Outer Outer and some other favorite haunts.

Rumor mill says Summit tomorrow…but zero backing details.
