Guest Report: The Snow Keeps Coming

I skipped skiing today hoping to get this common cold under control. Rhonda surprised me with a guest report. Thanks Rhonda!

Since Monday’s Unofficial report sounded pretty enticing and it also seems more and more like Sunday may be last day for Alpine 😢, I decided to head up to the mountain this morning, even tho, it looked like visibility might be nil and seemed likely Summit would be closed because the wind was very threatening.  When I arrived the parking lot wasn’t too much different than a mid-winter Friday (moderate but not insane), and Summit was running so there were minimal lines🎉.

Our small group, decided to start on RoundHouse. And the first run down Werner’s Schuss into Boomerang was fantastic, fresh powder everywhere with lots of hoots and hollering coming from the rest of the mountain (when it wasn’t deafened by the blowing wind)!

We did a number of RH runs as well as a few off of TLC.  All were terrific, sticking mostly to the areas typically groomed, or we knew to not have rocks – I still found one tho, skiers right on Weasel 😆 – but that’s what rock skis are for!!

Bob & John getting some early tracks off the side of Werner’s
Dot was out as usual ripping up the powder! Giving us all inspiration each time we see those colorful pants of hers!

Riding up TLC, a chair in front of ours, carried a small measuring device that contained a wooden cuboid🤓 (HomeDepot calls it a “Square Dowel”). Anyway, the lift operator grabbed it off the chair and after we got off, proceeded to measure the distance of oncoming chairs from the snow. This special device was first created and implemented by none other than  Bob L. Many thanks to all of the lift operators for keeping us safe!

An iced up Bobble beard. And I can assure you he never face planted today!
This view off to the right of the TLC chair looks down at the original chair line for the Weasel Chair – it had 4 stops, including one at the chalet!

Forecast is calling for more snow through tomorrow morning, a brief break Friday afternoon (maybe) and then another storm rolls in on Saturday! Sunday still looks to be sunny – perhaps Mark has spent more time with the models and has more of an update here…Editor: The point forecast is showing 3 to 7 inches for mid-mountain Saturday and Sunny skies Sunday.

Enjoy these last few wintery days at Alpine!!

Cheers, from one of your Unofficial Alpine Photographers.

  1. Nice writeup. It really was a great Sierra powder day. The wind helped smooth out the tracks so there were free refills all day. And I should know since I skied from opening bell to closing. I think I must have set a personal record of 24 laps on Summit today (thx to Apple Watch for tracking). The only bummer was getting confirmation from an employee that Sunday’s closing is pretty much set in stone.

  2. A fun, if not moist day today. Lots of goggle drips to go with those cakey powder turns. Nice to see they kept Summit spinning all day, though poor vis made good skiing limited to tree zones. They even fired up Yellow chair by 10:30, even though it was not originally scheduled. Makes total sense that Bills Hideaway is the old Weasel lift line; I never connected that before. BTW the email for the post turned up blank. I had to come to the site to read it. Get well soon Mark, I might have to run up the score on you for number of days!

    1. Yes, there was some weirdness when I copied and pasted Rhonda’s report from e-mail. It generated like 20,000 extra lines of code that made the mailing module choke today.
