It’s just a short report today. The skiing conditions were good all around today, very similar to what Andy reported yesterday. Even with mostly cloudy skies, most surfaces were very soft today, with the only exception being Dance Floor for the first two laps. It didn’t take long for the groomed runs to get pretty lumpy. By mid morning, the off piste terrain was smoother sailing than the groomers. We had great times today in Lower Beaver to Kangaroo, Tower 19, Solar Flare and on the Yellow groomer.
All bets seem to be off when it comes to a closing date. About ten days ago, I was hearing the first week of May as a projected closing date. That’s looking less and less likely with each passing day of warmth. We jumped out of the fire (last week) and back into the frying pan this week, meaning it’s cooler but still warm. Next week we’re back into not just a camp fire…more like a bonfire.
Just a few days ago the weather pundits were drooling over a big low pressure system that could move into the area next Monday. It appears that has been forgotten. All conversations now focus on a major heat wave by the middle of next week. I noted yesterday that the 10 day forecast on my phone was showing Alpine Meadows reaching the upper 60’s next week. Yikes!
Also, I saw my first rock poking out at the top of Rock Garden this afternoon. This is not good. The skiing and riding is fun, but you had better get it in while you can folks!
Tomorrow marks the 40th anniversary of the 1982 avalanche at Alpine Meadows. Look for a post on that here tomorrow morning.
Yesterday I hear that this weekend is the last weekend of KT being open. Most likely to make best use of the warm weather and restarting work on the new gondola.
