Shirt Sleeve Weather

Skiing this morning was delightful as the snow surface in many places has made the transition from slop to corn.

Sun Bowl was just right when I made turns from the Upper Saddle down Sun Bowl and then over to what I call lower Big Bend Bowl. The surface was less sun cupped and in better condition today then it was yesterday. I only toured over the High Traverse once today, but I spoke to a friend who was going for her third trip, thus I assume it remained in reasonably good condition all morning until patrol closed it for the day. Sherwood Chair was running for those doing the High Traverse. The main run is done for the year and will most likely be all dirt before long as the sun is shining and the temperatures are just too warm.

Main Sherwood is closed

It is 4pm and the temperature at the Summit is 53 degrees and at the base 57. I just returned from a beautiful bike ride along the Truckee River bike trail from Alpine Meadows to Sunnyside. The trail is dry and full of people riding and walking.

Lakeview appears to offline at this point due to lack of snow, but Scott Chair was spinning in the late morning. I did ski Low Beaver which was very good spring skiing. Coming out of the bowl and heading down to the top of Kangaroo or over to the lower Sisters was okay, but getting mushier and sticky at the eleventh hour.

Lower High Yellow Face

Skiing under the Alpine Bowl Chair and over to lower Palisades and Lower High Yellow Face remained in good condition into the late morning when I hung it up for the day. Coverage on the main trails on the front side is still pretty good.

Dry mountainsides looking east from the top of ABC, but Alpine Bowl has good coverage

It is a little depressing to stand at the top of ABC and look east toward Reno at mountains that are looking very bare this early in the spring.

Cooler weather may be ahead for the weekend and perhaps a touch of snow on Monday according to some forecasts that I have read, but then I think it will warm up again.

Enjoy your day,

Andy

  1. You may have figured out that they did not let people ski Sherwood terrain while the chair was open. High T would have been a good substitute, except for the sheer numbers of people heading that way. We did some perfect laps on the Roo, just avoiding the Summit line. Surprised to find that Bobby’s was still doable today, just barely. Still it was worth it to avoid traffic on Ridge.
