Dry roads, blue sky, and temperatures on the top of Summit hitting 54 degrees this afternoon. It was cool in the morning, but soon warmed into a spring-like day. Conditions on groomed trails were pristine today. Off-piste in the morning left something to be desired. Firm in many areas with wind blown snow piled into troughs between moguls. Thus, skiing off-piste was best done with turns directed at the dense wind blown snow and not the exposed frozen ruts, wind scoured knolls, or mogul heads.
As the day moved toward noon south facing slopes softened turning the snow that fell a couple of days ago and was blown around yesterday into a very sticky mess. However, the groomed areas of Sherwood, Lakeview, and Scott were soft and spring-like at the noon hour. We skied skier right of Sherwood Face in small moguls late in the morning where the surface varied from spring corn to sticky wind drifts. I would venture to say that the very warm temperatures we experienced today will turn many areas to corn tomorrow or Sunday.
As you can see from the attached photos Sherwood Face is flanked with exposed rock faces. Lake Tahoe looked very inviting today from both the top of Sherwood and along its shore in Tahoe City. The lack of wind today created a beautiful mirror finish to the lake.
I noted skiers and boarders enjoying the sun at the Ice Bar and the Chalet as well as the Alpine Meadows Lodge Deck. Weather is coming again next week, but it does not sound like it will bring a miracle March.
Enjoy your day,
Andy
The skiing at that ‘other’ mountain was awesome as it usually is.
Wintery steep moguls down the left middle of the west face best face, steep and technical and bumps galore.
Guess you gotta have the skills and athleticism to enjoy, but man what a world class lift served run, steep and long with no flat section till the end where it meets mtn run. Fun fun fun and hardly anyone as it takes some serious ability to enjoy.
