Some days are just perfect. Although the snow was not perfect on every aspect, the weather was most enjoyable. It was warm, really too warm for February, the crowds that were present yesterday dissipated to a large extent, and the wind sock atop tower 17 hung limply.
My goal today was to ski all morning without skiing on a groomed trail. I succeeded to a great extent. Of course it is difficult to ski from top to bottom without taking advantage of some groomed areas, but most of these are run-outs to the base of a lift.
The worst runs I encountered were in Sun and Big Bend Bowls. These areas have not been skier packed enough. The surface is made up of last weeks powder streaked with skier tracks going in all directions. Warm temperatures and the sun have baked the surface in to a mushy condition.
However, most of the other trails I traversed were delightful. Gentian Gully is still in good condition with the exception of the very bottom, which has turned to ice. Low Beaver presented cold snow for my turns followed by the open slope above Kangaroo which was pleasant spring snow by 10 this morning.
Our Father, although filled with moguls remains in good winter condition. The same is of true of slopes under Alpine Bowl Chair, below East and West Palisades, and medium Yellow which is below High Yellow Face.
First time this year for me in Hot Wheels Gully, which was much more enjoyable than I thought it would be, as the snow remains in good condition. There are a couple detours blocking drop offs that should not be skied, but in general it is just fun. Rolls and Knolls, the shoulder of Sympathy, and Banana Chute remain chalky with some shaved off slick spots to watch for as you maneuver the bumps.
Skiing was slower for me today as I was not racing down fresh corduroy, but most enjoyable.
Enjoy your day,
Andy
That is great news on Gentian. Hope it’s the same tomorrow!!!
