We snuck out of town for a couple of days, so I missed yesterday, which my friends claim was one of the best spring days yet. I guess that is what we are faced with for a good while longer. Very warm temperatures have settled over the Sierra. This afternoon the base of Alpine Meadows was showing temperatures above 46 degrees with the ridge top hovering at 41 degrees.
Overnight it is still cooling off below freezing. Thus, it’s nice corduroy in the morning, very firm surface conditions on the south facing slopes and off piste. Sherwood slopes softened around eleven or perhaps a little before. Good size moguls have grown on South Face, but they were topped with spring corn when we maneuvered over and through them in the late morning. It’s good practice and some real exercise when you ski a steeper slope filled with large moguls.
A couple of round trips on Lakeview skiing the smooth Outer Limits and Jörge’s Legacy, which shows on the trail map as Twilight Zone, rounded off a beautiful day.
I should mention that Summit and Alpine Bowl Chairs were on Wind Hold for much of the morning. They were running Summit when I headed back from Lakeview so some lucky person had early afternoon virgin corduroy.
Enjoy your day,
Andy Wertheim
Yes, the early afternoon corduroy was a treat and held up for about 45 minutes. A nice surprise considering it came so late. Kudo’s to AM for opening it.
Yesterday was sweet. Arrived 10:30, Headed to Sherwood for a few spring like warmup runs, then a few on Outer Limits, then back to the front. Took a corduroy lap on Kangaroo – first time skiing it this winter and then Summit opened 🙂 my friend and I got the Virginia corduroy on Wolverine and Alpine Bowl. Nasty, stop you on your skis, wind at the top of Wolverine however but well worth it!
