Can You Spell Meadows?

Colleen and Alexandra enjoying corduroy on Kangaroo

Icy particles were still blowing at the top of Alpine Bowl this morning stinging my face, Generally speaking the wind at the ridge top was not as strong as it was yesterday. We encountered day old and virgin corduroy on the upper mountain today. Grooming that occurred last night was very good as usual, but areas in Alpine Bowl and Wolverine Bowl that were not groomed last night created a surface that was not so pleasant. The surface was more firm, especially in Wolverine Bowl, and seemed to have a topping of tiny balls. . We searched for some new corduroy and found it on Kangaroo. I made my first trip up and down Kangaroo of the season this morning. In fact we made at least four round trips on the lightly used lift today. Ladies Slalom offered especially nice corduroy. Warmer temperatures are coming which is not really a good sign, but it should softened the south facing slopes and allow us to get off the groomed areas.

Werner’s Shuss was well groomed today and skied out nicely. As seen from Kangaroo.

Sherwood softened after noon and according to Mark the skiing was good. You never know until you go.

Pile of snow used to keep Sherwood in good skiable condition

Thank you to PT for changing the sign at the entrance to our valley. The other day it read Welcome to Alpine Meadows which is what it should say, in my opinion. I am not sure why it has changed again to Welcome to Alpine, but that is what it has said for the last few days. Please change it back to Alpine Meadows.

Enjoy your day,

Andy Wertheim

  1. Yes, selected areas of Sherwood were very fun in the afternoon. It was fun enough that we did 11 laps there before moving on to Scott. Sherwood Face proper was still crispy at 2 pm, but terrain facing just a bit more west was beautiful. This includes the area just to the right of the creek that was groomed a week or so ago. We called it “Maid Robin Tucks” as all of the names there are confusing and the maps over the years are conflicting, We also noticed that a huge amount of snow was farmed near the top of Arts Knob to keep the choke at the top of Sherwood Run covered.

Regarding the sign change to “Welcome to Alpine”, it does allow the entire message on one screen rather than two. That makes it safer for drivers. Not to mention there are two signs saying that now. I think I am okay with just “Welcome to Alpine”…seeing as 13 years ago I named this site UnofficialAlpine.com and not UnofficialAlpineMeadows.com. For those that like the new name, you can access this site at UnofficialPalisadesTahoe.com if you like.

Boy skiing was fun today…can’t wait until tomorrow!
