Here Come the Olympics

Thad and Julie Sigourney spotted at Alpine this morning.

The Winter Olympics are just around the corner. We are all getting ready to cheer for our local athletes, hoping they will bring home smiles and medals. Many of the Olympic hopefuls grew up skiing in the Tahoe area with their parents shuttling them for one ski resort to the next for their competitions. One of our favorite athletes heading to China in the next few days is Freestyle Skier Brita Sigourney, who recently won a Silver Medal at the X Games in Aspen. Brita will be competing in her third Olympics in the Half Pipe competition. We enjoyed skiing with Thad and Julie Sigourney today. They are the proud and nervous parents of Brita.

I should also mention the son of one of my neighbors in Alpine Meadows, Travis Ganong, who will be competing in the Downhill and Super G events.

Clear and warm with very good spring skiing is how I would describe the overall conditions we met on the slopes today. Corn snow could be found aplenty on the south facing slopes at Sherwood and later at Lakeview and Scott. Earlier in the day we shot down corduroy once again. According to the weather forecasters colder temperatures and wind (lots of it) are on the way tonight through Wednesday.

My ski day was short today, as it ended with a run or two at Sherwood after having torn up the groomed slopes of Summit Chair. Assuming South Face at Sherwood softened as it did yesterday, I can report that the spring corn is fabulous. Moguls are large and aplenty on many slopes, but it is so much fun to ski them slowly while making rather quick turns down the fall line. Mark sent me a text saying the corn in Zero Chute to the skiers right of Sherwood Face was excellent.

Lakeview slopes waiting in the sun for firm to turn to corn.

I picked up a new sweatshirt with the old Alpine Meadows Logo proudly displayed on the front this afternoon. All the Alpine Meadows logo wear is on sale because it is being phased out and replaced with the new PT logo. Of course this brings another heartache to the old Alpine Meadows skiers. Make your voice heard and perhaps PT marketing will reconsider eliminating the Icon(ic) AM logo.

Enjoy your day,

  1. Today was probably the best day of real corn skiing yet at Sherwood. I bet it was the same over the weekend, I just did not have the tolerance for the Sherwood line when there was good skiing elsewhere. I’ve noticed the increasingly large display of fandom for Travis Ganong at the bottom of Juniper Mountain road. Loving the Olympic spirit and I am sad for the athletes that this one is charged with political undertones.
