That Awkward Transitional Period

I can’t actually tell you how skiing was today. Although the morning sunrise was totally amazing, it was followed by that dark shield of grey clouds that killed my drive to get on the mountain. By the time I had noticed that the sky turned blue, I was deep into a binge of “The Shrink Next Door”. Also…based on yesterday’s conditions, we are stuck in that awkward transitional period between good winter snow and good spring snow.

What does that mean? The off piste areas got a little crispy, and temperatures have not been quite warm enough to soften anything that does not have a direct southern exposure. The groomed terrain itself is either very firm, or it’s been tilled and is the consistency of marbles or small pebbles. As temperatures continue to warm this week, we’ll begin to see more transition into corn-like conditions in select areas of the mountain. These transitions happen first on Sherwood, Ridge and Bobby’s.

Now that I can assure you that Dr. Ike Herschkopf is not a good person, I expect to be back out on the slopes tomorrow. Fortunately, since I skied every day of the season last year, I have that out of my system. It’s okay that I missed another day, other than it does make it more difficult to write a ski report.

If you’re waiting for the next powder refresh, it could be a long wait. The most recent runs of the GFS show no signs of any storms within the next 16 days. At least the morning run tried to bring in an AR event on Day 16. Fortunately there is a good base at this time, and eventually we will get a bit closer to spring conditions. At least the midweek crowds are light before we go into the three day weekend.

Total precipitation through January 26th. In this case, white does NOT mean snow.

  1. The last two days, we skied from opening bell until 2pm, since my son insists. I was surprised that Bobby’s had turned to good spring snow by 1pm on Sunday, and today Bobby’s, Standard etc. turned all soft corny creamy stuff by noon. The corduroy lasted much longer today also, and was really nice first thing, mostly marble free. But as it scraped off it got more….well, you know. Where did all the people go? I didn’t arrive this morning until 8:30 and found an empty lot 3, and ended up parking at the front of lot 2. More people came in later today, but really no lines on the mountain.

      1. Okay I am going to stand by what I posted yesterday. Lower on the mountain on Dance Floor, Werners and Weasel, things got very marble-y after the first hour. That said, everything higher than Roundhouse was right on perfect.
