Winter Arrived Overnight

  • by

I am sure all of you have experiences extreme weather in the past couple of days. We sure have had our share in Tahoe. Yesterday it was raining lions and elephants in Alpine Meadows. Rain was slamming into my windows driven by winds gusting as high as 140 mile per hour over the ridge tops. Driving rains lasted all day and into the night. Streams filled, the Truckee River reached flood stage, and Lake Tahoe rose a significant amount. The noise of rain slamming into my windows continued until a fell asleep. I woke up around 1:30 in the morning and immediately noted silence had returned, but it was not supposed to be quiet. A peek out the window confirmed that it was snowing and not longer raining. It has been snowing ever since I peeked out the window, although at this hour it seems to be letting up.
I measured 17 inches of snow on my deck mid morning. I do not know how much the mountain received, but I assume it was significantly more. The ski area website indicates 24″ overnight. I would tend to believe this report. Snow that fell is very wet and should make for an excellent base layer.
I drove up to the base lodge at Alpine and took a couple of photos. The sky was not clear yet so the pictures are not very good. The parking lot is filled with mounds of snow. I am sure there is enough snow to have skied down Kangaroo.
Power is out in parts of the valley as is some internet.
It is amazing how winter can arrive in such a short time.
