How About Palisades Tahoe?

It seems like a new name has been selected for the Other Valley. We’ve been hearing whispers about the name “Palisades” for more than a week. Although an official announcement has not been made yet, a little tidbit of information leaked out onto the Interwebz. This always happens for Apple’s big announcements too. It seems like Alterra Mountain Company has settled on the name of “Palisades Tahoe” for the mountain formerly known as Squaw Valley.
Like it or not, I completely get the reasoning behind the name change. It’s the world we live in, and usually it’s for the better. I will say that the Palisades are certainly iconic when you think about Squaw Valley. Search for Squaw Valley on YouTube and you will find thousands of videos of cool skiers pulling crazy runs off of classic lines of the Palisades.
Would Olympic Valley have been a better choice? Of course it would have. The International Olympic Committee probably saw that differently. That is not an unexpected result. So where does that leave us at Alpine Meadows? I’ve heard it both ways. There is a “Palisades” at Alpine Meadows, and it is a lot of fun. But nobody I know would consider that it is an iconic part of Alpine Meadows. That said, nobody I know, in particular readers here, will ever use any name other than Alpine Meadows for our preferred mountain… Here’s the new logo, as we just snagged it off of blog.palisadetahoe.com. I like it.
Updating….as the new website is live again. The trail maps for the mountain formerly known as the Other Valley are now called “Olympic Valley”, while the trail maps for Alpine Meadows still call it “Alpine”. The question remains, will they continue to use the Alpine Meadows logo and a green color scheme for Alpine Meadows…or once again try to force change where it is not needed, nor wanted?
What are your thoughts on the new name Palisades Tahoe?

In case you didn’t notice, thanks to the help of some very observant readers, we were the first site to report this news this morning. 🙂

  1. even really matter?
Really who cares, all a bunch of marketing bs
    aka PC positively crap
skiing and snowboarding will still exist.
When original Squaw Valley owner, yes Squaw valley, named the area, he had no intention whatsoever of insulting anyone, nor did former owner Alex Cushing.
Bigger worriesome issue is this thing called drought and global warming.
Name change big deal so what.
Oh and am hearing it will be combined into one name, potentially no more Alpine Meadows either, squa-walpine that if you can.

    1. Hah too funny
      Nice take
      Let the jokes begin
Hey wanna hop on the gondi and go over and ride that new named resort?
Nah I just cant deal w PTSD 🙂

  2. Like everything else the commotion over the new name will and then fall as steeply as the mountain cliff. Within a month no body will care and within 5 to 10 years the new visitors will think it has always been named thusly. Personally I will always call it The Other Valley.

  3. Will the marketing team call the-hill-formerly-known-as-Alpine Palisades South? Palisades Family Zone? Alpine Palisades? Palpine? I truly hope for a variety of reasons they don’t try to smash things together again, but whatever, this changes nothing for me.

Oh, wait, they’re putting in a gondola for no riding experience improvment reason, so there’s that… and that means the parking lot and TLC/Meadows area may be a walk around construction area all winter for kids and newbies… and my locker room is going to be buried? WTF Squapalisades?

  4. From the FAQ:
How does this affect Alpine Meadows?
Palisades Tahoe is the name of the resort as a whole. We have been one resort for a decade now. Though Olympic Valley and Alpine Meadows have their own identities, we have very much been a single entity for a while. While Palisades Tahoe will encompass the whole resort, we will use Olympic Valley and Alpine Meadows to refer to each base area, for uses like on directional signage or which base area you should pick up rentals or meet your ski lesson at.

  5. With so many horrendous things dominating in the news lately — COVID, climate change, wildfires, floods, the attacks on voting and abortion rights, Afghanistan, racism, the rise of anti semitism, the worldwide attack on democracy and the rise of autocracy and authoritarianism and the resultant increase in starvation and refugees. — it was so great to get one huge laugh today. Palisades Tahoe — what a hoot.

  6. Palisades Tahoe…sounds like a Long Term Memory Care Facility. Nice to know when I can’t remember what the hell I’ve been doing for the last 30 yrs I can stay.

  7. Cool, glad they changed the name and glad they’re keeping the branding for both ski areas. But it looks like there’s a giant forest fire behind the eagle – they couldn’t have made it blue?

  8. Every note in the press just says that Squaw Valley has changed their name without mentioning the new name. Wonder what they’ll call Squaw chair, Squaw Valley Lodge et.al. and how much will it cost Alterra to do the rebrand so that people will still just call it Squaw.

  9. Squaw one chairlift is now renamed Wa She Shu
Will be fun to hear how the young kids who ride that
lift for ski lessons and mighty mights programs.
waaaaa sheeesh shuuuus my feet hurt lol
