Heat Is On The Way

Heat is on the way, but today the air was cool, at least during the early morning hours. Our first turns on corduroy, after a cool couple of days, were perfect for carving wide turns. I would call the snow wintery. Not hard firm corduroy, as we have had in the past this season, that screams loudly as you travel down the slope, but fairly quiet snow that holds an edge.

The surface off piste is well tracked by skiers who enjoyed the new snow the other day, but it has not turned to corn yet. The surface did soften soon after opening hour, but it was not the easiest to ski. Soft enough, but piled with rubble between any well used ski tracks. All of the groomed runs were delightful.

Off piste I enjoy the cotton candy consistency, but I might have been in the minority. Medium Yellow and Yellow Trail itself took some extra concentration and energy to complete without stopping. We stopped at the base of Medium Yellow to discuss the conditions we had just skied.  Of course I indicated it was not bad.  Mark thought is was somewhat terrible and Bob I. thought the best part of the run was the groomed area at the end of the slope.

Pink Moon over the Sierra Crest this morning

We traversed out to make a few turns on the Tiegel Chute slope. Tower 19 was also soft, but was beginning to get sticky around 11. Tomorrow we are expecting temperatures in the 60’s, which is going to change the consistency of the snow. It will most likely turn to a very mushy and sticky condition.

Enjoy your day.

Andy

It was not very crowded today.  Skiing the groomed without many people is the best.
Clear blue skies and well groomed slopes

  1. Ouch, now that’s a little harsh Andy. My comment regarding Medium Yellow was that it was manky and not consolidated. I don’t think I said “terrible”, it just needs more time to consolidate. As to Gunner’s knob, I happened to find perfect creamed corn in Poma Bowl, to the right of Tiegel Chutes.

We should still get a freeze tonight that will help get us a step closer to corn again.
