Warm weather brings melting snow. Our low snow pack is showing signs of disappearing. This is especially true on the main Sherwood Run. The snow has gotten so thin in spots that grooming has been discontinued on a portion of the main slope. We ran into ski patrol setting up the “Not Groomed” sign this morning.
We did enjoy a number of trips up and down Sherwood on soft spring snow. Following the slope down to the drainage, which would be the skiers left of the Sherwood Face, and also between rock bands to the skiers right of Sherwood Face, we found good spring corn snow.
Early in he morning, Summit Chair blessed us with smooth spring snow on well groomed slopes. However, it took an hour or more before the very firm corduroy on the lower trails softened. It was extremely loud skiing Dance Floor on the first few runs this morning.
Just before 11, Bobby’s was slowly beginning to turn to corn, and I am sure Lakeview would have been a half hour behind before soft carving turns would have put those smiles on our faces.
Now let’s mention that Subway Chair, great for beginners and those needing a lift after skiing Gentian Gully, is now closed for the season. Snow still covers the run, but space is needed in the parking lot for storage of gondola parts and equipment which will be arriving soon. If all goes well eight skiers and/or boarders will be riding enclosed gondola cars back and forth to and from Squaw Valley next season.
Of course they may not be arriving from Squaw Valley, as the name will have been changed, but a few may be leaving Alpine Meadows on their way to the other valley. By the way, I was told that Squaw Valley hats are on sale at the Estelle Sport at 50% off for anyone who might want one.
Enjoy your day,
Andy
After you left Sherwood, I stayed and did 10 more laps over toward South Face. The runout got pretty sticky or I would have stayed there. At noon, Ridge and Bobby’s were getting just right.
Ah well, Thank you Andy! I’ve been skiing vicariously through your wonderfully descriptive and even poetic descriptions. Of course through my families tales of sweet sweet powder runs too… See you on the slopes next year Paddy P
Promised Land had not softened by 12:30-1pm. Not sure it ever did since we did not return.
