Ice Be Gone

It is amazing how much of a difference 6 to 9 inches of snow falling overnight can make to the surface of our mountain slopes. Yesterday I was still dealing with lumps, bumps, and steeps where a somewhat thin layer of lovely new snow covered ice from prior days. Very little firmness was exposed today. All I felt under foot was new layer of lovely snow. 6 to 9 inches of snow is enough to make one feel that they are skiing powder. It was enough to silence the loud noises we have heard for the past couple of days as skis and boards came in contact with a hard icy surface. Silence is wonderful when you are skiing and communing with nature.

Even with today’s new snow a low angle slope was better then some of the steeper trails. I heard plenty of loud noise from those skiers and boards coming down Scott Chute, however silence blessed me on Yellow Trail first thing in the morning followed by Standard Run and Bobby’s which put a smile on my face. Gentian was already pretty well skied by the time we wandered through the trees, but soft turns were plentiful. Skiing Outer-Outer Limits in the trees as well as Power Line kept softness underfoot and an occasional spray of snow to my waistline. My favorite runs of the day were places where I found few if any tracks in front of me. Yellow Trail on the first run, Scott Meadow, Standard, and a few secret spots that I will keep to myself.

It was truly a day of snow showers. The sun popped through for a few minutes, then it was just cloudy, and a few minutes later snow was falling.

Enjoy your day,

Andy

  1. It was definitely a lot more busy today than yesterday, so things were schralped pretty quickly. After Bobble and I made those 8’s on our first run, we managed one more clean run in Bobby’s before heading off to more hidden areas where you did not have to race for good snow. Although the upper lots were filled early today, many people left early as the easy pow was consumed. A whole new round of people was arriving around noon.
