Mogrog

Variable lighting made it difficult to determine where the dips and rises in the surface occurred at times during the day. A good grooming on the slopes overnight created an acceptable surface in the morning on most slopes. Getting off the groomed trails was not a good idea. We stood atop D7 with hopes of diving into the slope for some softer winter snow. We found a smooth icy field at the top that turned us around. We took D8 down which was groomed.

I attempted to ski off the groomed toward North Peril only to be turned back after discovering that the nice looking snow that appeared to be soft powder was actually rock hard. After this minor foray into he off-piste, I stayed on the groomed runs. D8, Wolverine, Alpine Bowl, Sun Spot, Sweet Spot, Terry’s Return, Bobby’s and Ridge Run were all pretty good. I did not ski Lakeview or Sherwood today, but my friends indicated they were also pretty good.

Yesterday Mark wrote about various things in his report including making some comments about the food at Alpine. He mentioned that some were disappointed he did not mention the Mogrog Café located at the base of Subway Chair in the Achieve Tahoe building. I decided it was time to give it a try, as I have not purchased anything from them this year.

We pulled a couple of chairs up onto the snow bank under Subway Chair (a mistake not to be repeated in the future as I discovered it was a good place for riders to knock snow off their skis which will land on your head or lap). It was cool and a few snow flakes were falling from the sky as we sat waiting for our order. I ordered a bowl of the soup of the day which was Sweet Potato Carrot Bisque with a Pretzel Bun on the side. The soup was delivered in a timely manner. It was warm and honestly delicious. I am attaching couple of photos of the front of the café where service is from the window with only outdoor seating. The menu should be visible in the photos. Based on my limited tasting of the menu I would highly recommend you give it a try.

Tomorrow looks like it maybe warmer with possible snow showers.

Enjoy your day,

Andy

  1. The other Bob and I stayed out until after 2pm to take advantage of the 1/2 inch of new snow that fell midday. Wolverine and Terry’s deserve some extra mention for just being silky smooth in the afternoon for high speed arcs. I did find that the off piste snow was still quite acceptable in the Yellow zone, doing ten laps there mid-day. I’ll echo that North Peril is very aptly named given the current conditions. We took a full run there in the afternoon that got my full wide-eyed attention!

  2. Alex and MOGROG rock. We (employees) have to get there super-early on weekends in order to avoid the gridlock and make sure we can find parking. I was there at 7 last Saturday morning, and even though Mogrog wasn’t technically open yet, the very nice dude working the window opened it up and sold me a hot cup of coffee. Old School Alpine hospitality.

  3. Hmm food. I would give almost anything for a bowl of the old minestrone Tried asking for the recipe a few times but was rebuffed. Now surely lost to the sands of time.
