Achieve Tahoe

I waited until noon to give the slopes a try on this slightly overcast day. High thin clouds that let a little sun through to give some definition to the mountainside. I found groomed areas to be reasonable good for that time of day with slick areas were the snow had been shaved off. North Peril and High Yellow made me the happiest as the snow was still in winter condition. They have that chalk consistency.

I tried Bobby’s Run which was just not quiet soft enough to call it spring snow at 1:30. A little spring snow on the surface on some areas and then slick firm spot to trip one up. Mountain View was about the same although perhaps more firm than Bobby’s. A tour down the main Sherwood Run was not better. Shaved off surface created turns that defied my edges.

I was a little tepid deciding to drop into Gentian Gully for my last run of the afternoon. It is difficult to judge the conditions given the weather we have been enjoying. I have wanted to ski for a couple of days but deferred to other runs. I am happy that I made the choice to day as the snow was as good as it was on other north facing slopes. There are moguls has you turn through the trees, but I did not find them oppressive. As one would expect the very bottom section was icy (this is if you ski down to Subway Chair).

I rode Subway Chair to get back to the lodge and watched a young boy being onto the chair. He was handicapped and taking a lesson with a couple of the Achieve Tahoe instructors. What a wonderful program they are running at Alpine Meadows. I just wanted to mention this as I think we do not always see their efforts and the joy that the participants receive as they slide down the slopes. Three cheers to the Achieve Tahoe staff.

It was a pleasure skiing right up to the lift and not having to wait in line.

Enjoy your day,

Andy

  1. Hey, Andy, that young boy is my son, Julian! He’s a local boy; goes to North Tahoe School on Tahoe City. He has been skiing with Achieve Tahoe for several years; it is a rear program! We are so lucky to have this program here for our local disabled community, as well as our visitors. Thanks for giving the program a shoutout, and for photos of my son:)

  2. 3 more cheers for Achieve Tahoe!!! One of our kids has been in their program for a few years. She has made incredible strides thanks to the simply outstanding staff. We’ve been an Alpine family for many years, but Achieve became a foundational part of our experience and we are incredibly thankful. Hotter Wheels here we come!

  3. Nice shout out for Achieve Tahoe. For what it’s worth, handicapped is no longer politically correct. I know it’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks, but person with a disability, or something to that affect might be a better choice of words moving forward.
