Words of the day for January 25, 2021 are Woo Hoo! Overnight, the sky slowly dropped light white flakes on to roads, stairs, decks, and of course mountain slopes. More snow fell than I expected, ticking up the heart beat as morning arrived. 7 inches at the base of Alpine and somewhat more, perhaps 10 inches, fell at the upper elevations.
A beautiful white mountain greeted us as we stood in the early morning line at Summit anxiously waiting for our first ride to the top. The wait was worth it. My thighs felt snow caressing them as I made my first powder turns in quite awhile. Depth of new surface was just enough to bring back that feeling of soft snow underfoot. It was exhilarating turning down Alpine Bowl, Tower 19, Terry’s Return, South Peril, Gunner’s Knob, Standard Run, and last but not least, Gentian Gully.
Of course it was not perfect, as the depth of our first round of snow was light and not deep enough to eliminate hard frozen moguls lying just below the surface. Steeper slopes revealed patches of ice as the new snow was scraped to the side. Rocks found the bottoms of my skis a few times during the day, but who cared when I was having so much fun.
I cannot wait for the next couple of feet to fall which should make skiing through the woods safer and less toxic to the bottoms of my boards.
Enjoy your day,
Andy
Andy…you sound like a poet describing the powder! Love it! Paddy
I enjoyed that day immensely too Andy. It was certainly the lightest and driest snow we have seen this season. Fortunately, switching to my newer set of skis, without the super slow permawax, was the right choice today. I found one tiny new scratch from a bush i skied over in Lower 40 Gully…not bad for a shark infested mountain. I’ll ski some extra laps for you tomorrow.
