Falling Water

  • by

Melting snow is filling our streams and creating spectacular waterfalls for those who dare to hike a little into the wilderness. The other day we headed to the foothills to do a one day wine club pickup trip stopping at our favorite wineries in El Dorado and Amador Countries. It was great to get away and gaze at new scenery for a change. Along the way we stopped to hike to Horseshoe Falls.

This is a large waterfall that spills over granite slabs west of Echo Summit along Hwy. 50. You can see the falls from the highway. There is a parking lot adjacent to Hwy. 50 where the trail to Horseshoe Falls begins. This trail continues after the 1.5 or so mile hike to the base of the fall. You can hike to Lake of the Woods, Pyramid Peak, and beyond both of which are in the Desolation Wilderness as is Horseshoe Falls. I have seen this fall for many years and have always been in too much of a hurry to stop. This time we parked (parking is $8 for day use unless you have a national parks pass). The hike winds through forested areas that include some beautiful Cedar Trees and over granite slabs. Views are vast and the sound of rushing water can be heard all along the trail. This is not a difficult hike, but it is not easy either. There are some granite boulders to climb over especially toward the end of the hike. Elevation gain is only 600 feet. We spent a little less than 2 hours completing the out and back trip.

Yesterday afternoon we walked part way up Shirley Canyon in Squaw Valley to check out the water flowing down Shirley Creek. We did not go all the way to the lake, but others coming down said the trail was basically clear to he lake. Clear skies, warm weather, and rushing water make this a must do hike this time of year. It did not disappoint.

Tahoe was quiet this morning as winds were nil and boat traffic was minimal. Flat water is most likely early in the morning which is best for paddle boarding and kayaking. It was delightful this morning. I find it hard to believe that cold weather is coming back this weekend with the possibility of snow fall later in the weekend, but that is what I have heard.

Enjoy your day,

Andy
