Warm Weather

Hello Friends,

Nice warm temperatures have locals reaching beyond their front doors. We are maintaining social spacing and wearing a mask when appropriate. People are walking, road biking, mountain biking, and putting their kayaks or paddle boards on the lake. Physically we need the exercise and mentally we need to be outside the house, at least for part of the day. However it is important not to join a crowd or exercise on a path or trail that is too popular during these stressful times.

I found a quiet spot on the lake from which I was able to launch my kayak without encountering very many people. A couple of hours of paddling on the flat deep blue surface of Lake Tahoe provided both some upper body exercise and time for a zen-like break from reality. The beauty of being on the lake this time of year is that there are very few, if any, motorized boats on the water. I did not see one boat that was not powered by man during my two hour paddle.

Local paved bike trails are free of snow. Riding on the westshore trail I did not encounter excessive number of humans. Those that were using the path were very respectful of the need for distancing. We rode from Tahoe City to Tahoma and back which came to just over 17 miles. I took a short ride from Tahoma to Meeks Bay that included a short side trip through Sugar Pine Point State Park. It is so beautiful without locals and tourists wandering through the park. Sugar Pine Point is open to locals according to the website. Meeks Bay is closed to the public, but you can ride to the end of the bike trail which takes you to the edge of the lake to enjoy the view.
The first flowers of spring were blooming north of Truckee where trails are slowly drying up. Yellow Buttercups filled a meadow and Beckwith’s Violets were popping there head out of the ground.
Watching flowers show there faces and grasses turn green gives me hope that a new beginning is near.

Enjoy your day,

Andy

We’re posting these sort of reports for those of us that already live in Tahoe. Yes, we do need to get out of the house now that the weather is warm and participate in some safe outdoor activities. It’s not the time yet for people from other areas to come to Tahoe just yet, as keeping a safe distance then becomes impossible. We hope it all changes soon! – Editor

  1. Gosh I was reading this wondering why Mark didn’t tell me about all this kayaking, bike riding and when did Mark know what all these flowers are… Mystery solved when I saw oh this is Andy’s turn.. and Mark really was repairing and painting the fence all day…
