Snow Sculptures At The Ranch & Let The Ski Sales Begin

Mark is out of town for Robbie & Laura’s wedding this weekend, and my guess is that on Saturday skiing may have been a blowout. So instead of a regular report, we queued up a couple of announcements.

River Ranch To Close Out Snow Fest With Their Snow Sculpture Contest Sunday, March 8th

There was a time where there were a number of fun events sponsored by Alpine Meadows, but with the exception of Snow Golf and Beacon & Eggs, those days are over. But next weekend, our friends at the River Ranch (second home to many Alpine Meadows regulars and employees) has you covered. As a part of Snowfest 2020, they will again be hosting the snow sculpture contest. Before you ask, yes, Longo’s will be trucking in snow for the event. Teams of one to four people will be able to build their creation from their pile of snow. The cost to register your team is $10 per person, which does include lunch.

Teams will have from 12pm until 3pm to create their sculpture. Teams are asked to not include “adult themes”, as River Ranch management is aware of the idea of “TTP.” Judging will be occurring between 3pm and 4pm, and awards will be announced at 4pm. All teams will win, but the top 3 teams will receive “grand prizes”.

Teams can register with Danielle at the River Ranch, at 530-583-4263×203 or via email.

The Ski Sales Have Begun

It’s not easy being in the ski equipment business, either as a manufacturer or a retailer. When the snow falls, people want to buy new equipment. When it doesn’t fall, very few people are thinking about buying new skis, boots or outerwear. Local vendors still have a lot of inventory on hand this season.

Josh at Slant Skis just announced this week that he has discounts of $100 to $300 on skis at this time. That makes for some pretty big bargains for some great skis. All models are on sale, except for the Blur and the Ambush, which are sold out for the season. There currently is not an end date for the sale, it just says “very soon”. Just because you buy them now, you don’t have to use them this season, unless conditions recover to a more normal state. We’re big fans of the Blaze and NoPro models, which we reviewed earlier this season.

If you’re looking for equipment other than indy skis, rather than send your money to a faceless online mega-merchant, spend your money locally to keep our ski shops in business. We’re big fans of the Tahoe Sports Hub on West River Street in Truckee. Let’s keep Rob and Wrenn smiling!
