A Powder Day?

  • by

Hello Skiers and Riders,

Sunday I did not hit the slopes.  It just looked wet and foggy at times with low lighting.  A friend I met this morning claimed the sun came out in the afternoon and the skiing got better.  They claimed to have stayed out having fun until the closing bell.  This morning the sun was bright in the sky and everything looks clean and white.  A beautiful morning.  I made the mistake of trying to finish some work before heading out to the slope. Alpine was reporting two inches of new snow.  I had an inch or two on my deck that had frozen solid overnight making me think it would be better to wait for the conditions to change as warmer air softened the surface.  I was wrong.  For some reason there was more new snow on the mountain than I expected.  Perhaps four to six inches in places.  Early morning was a powder morning for those that were on the hill at the opening bell.  The word spread that High Traverse was the best it has been all year.  Excellent turns in soft powder snow.

I did make a run over the High “T” through the  Big Bend area.  It was about to turn to Sierra Cement, but had not made the transition yet.  Thus, I found some untracked snow and enjoyed a number of soft fresh turns before hitting sticky snow at the bottom.  There were some sweet turns in Low Beaver Bowl followed by wet slush above the Kangaroo Chair. D8, D7, the far side of Wolverine Bowl, and a few turns under the Alpine Bowl Chair offered turns winter-like skier chop.

It was a typical warm spring day.  Good snow all over the mountain in the early morning, followed by Sierra Cement as the warm sun changed the consistency of the surface.

Powder is on the way according to some people who follow these things that I spoke to a chair ride up Summit.  They claim two feet in the next three days.  Maybe we will get a real powder day soon.

Enjoy your day,

Andy
