Today was one of those days that just makes one feel good. There was not a cloud in the sky. Spring conditions with temperatures sneaking up to 48 at the base. First runs in the morning were on the well groomed surfaces. Sunspot seemed to soften earlier than some of the other trails, but most of the groomed areas off Summit were just fine for carving wide turns or just getting up some speed. According to the Squaw Valley App that I turned on today tracking my every move my top speed achieved on Yellow Trail was 53 mph. I am not really convinced that I need to know all of the data they are collecting from skiers, but some of it is interesting.
Off piste improved with the warming temperatures. I enjoyed skiing South Face and Sherwood Face this morning. However, areas such as Tower 19 were unpleasant to say the least. The area is still pretty frozen. I did not join my friends who thought they would try Juniper Face in the afternoon. The report indicated that 10 turns were good, a number were firm and not all that enjoyable, and the hour glass near the bottom of Scott Chute was frozen solid and of no use at all.
We skied Standard Run, Ridge Run, and Bobby’s Run off Scott a few times early in the afternoon. They offered up very nice soft spring turns. Likewise, Outer Limits on Lakeview was delightful. Off piste has not been giving us much pleasure lately as it has been pretty firm much of the day.
I saw a news brief this afternoon stating that the lawsuit pending against the owners of Squaw/Alpine has been settled. Along with the Forest Service approval for the gondola connection between Squaw and Alpine it now appears that Alterra Co. has all their ducks in a row to move forward with construction of the lift.
