X-tra Good And An X-Games Alert

The skiing today was definitely extra good. The forecast rain never materialized, just as we thought might happen. There were very few people on the mountain and every lift was running. It was a day for hot laps on groomed runs, only occasionally slowing for flat light conditions. We especially liked Jörg’s Legacy (aka Twilight Zone) and Sherwood Run for fast creamy laps.

Off piste skiing was quite a bit more variable. Much of the off-piste terrain can still be classified as undercooked mashed potatoes or chunder. As temperatures rose during the day, we found some areas that did ski very well. Our two favorites were North Peril, albeit short, and East Sherwood Face, which starts out great and deteriorates as you get farther downhill. Honestly the off piste terrain just needs more traffic to ski it in.

Looking ahead at the weather, things seem to be improving. For Saturday, the rain continues to hold off until after the lifts close. The latest trend is to bring in the cold air a bit sooner, so we should be in an all snow position by the time lifts spin on Sunday. This is a good thing. The point forecast for Alpine Meadows only shows the potential for 2-6 inches of snow. The last run of the GFS is a little more bullish at up to a foot. Six inches is probably the safer bet.

Alpine Meadows Athletes Competing At The X-Games This Weekend

Two athletes that grew up on the Alpine Meadows Freestyle Team (roughly 2002-2008), both Olympic medalists, will compete in skier superpipe at the X-Games this weekend. David Wise won the Olympic superpipe gold medal in 2014 and 2018. Brita Sigourney took the bronze medal in 2018. While David hasn’t been seen much at Alpine lately, Brita Sigourney’s family skis here frequently as they still own a condo in Alpine Meadows. You may have seen Brita enjoying powder in the upper bowls during Christmas week.

The women’s ski superpipe finals will be available on ESPN on Youtube on Saturday, January 25th at 5:30 PST. Here’s the link.

The men’s ski superpipe finals will be televised on ESPN during the course of the regular X-Games broadcast on Sunday, January 26th between 5:30 and 8:00 PST.

We wish the best of luck to both athletes!

  1. Is there one more athlete, I think Colby Stevenson grew up in Lake Tahoe… Man what a treat to watch everyone compete this year!
