Yeah, I know, the team slogan for the Alpine Meadows Tele Team is “Keeping Tahoe Tele.” But Bennett Drummond and Jonny York went to Grand Targhee, Wyoming last weekend and took 1st and 2nd place in the junior division of the 2013 Big Mountain Telemark Competition. So yes, it would be appropriate to say “keeping tele Tahoe.”
The telemark community is already well aware of Bennett Drummond, age 14. He’s been making his presence known in the Rockies for the last three seasons. It was no surprise that Bennett took 1st place honors at Grand Targhee this year.
This time Bennett was joined by Alpine Meadows Tele Team member Jonny York, age13, who took the second place spot on the podium at this year’s comp. Jonny’s background is very similar to Bennett’s: Started skiing at 4, switched to tele at 10 and has been on the AMTT for three seasons.
Reportedly, Drummond and York’s scores were only about a point from each other, but both scored about 30 points higher than any other junior competitor. There’s never been a doubt about the greatness of the Alpine Meadows Telemark Team. It’s awesome to see the efforts of the athletes, coaches and parents pay off so nicely.
We’re still waiting on some action pictures from the event. Those families are likely still in travel mode. We will add them to this post when we get some.
Congrats to the rippers and their coaches! I was at Targhee, but too busy skiing powder to watch the comp. Saw that they blasted the back side of Peaked so the tele competitors could ski that and Mary’s Nipple. Our Alpine boys sure got a good taste of Teton powder!
