Happy New Year

Skiers and Boarders,

It is almost 2020. It seems hard to believe that it has been 20 years since we worried about our computers crashing as 1999 turned into 2000. The past 10 years were difficult at times and just as rewarding at other times.

My wish for the coming decade is that it bring peace and joy to everyone and 100 plus days on the mountain for me.

Tomorrow is a very special day in my family’s life. My father, who still lives in Alpine Meadows, turns 100 on December 31, 2019. I have attached a photo of him in a sitski taken January 1, 2018. That was a very special day for someone who loved to ski, as he had not been on the hill for a few years. I feel very lucky and honored to have had, Ernest Wertheim, as my father. He has been an inspiration to me and everyone he has come in contract with during his incredible life. Happy 100th dad.

Clouds moved into the area this morning bringing light snow this afternoon. Early winds over the ridge seem to have died down somewhat. The temperatures are warmer than they have been the past couple of days, above freezing at the lower elevations of the mountain. I made a few runs this morning testing the nice grooming off ofSummit Chair and the winter packed moguls in Gentian Gully.

Happy New Year

Conditions remain very good. I did not venture over to Sherwood or ski any south facing slopes that may have firmed up overnight do to the warm temperatures that softened some slopes yesterday afternoon. One might assume that some south facing slopes were firm today.

May the first winter of the 2020’s be a great one.

Enjoy your day,

Andy

  1. Please give your Dad my warmest Happy Birthday Wishes on December 31. Thank you for sharing his birthday with everyone on your Blog.

  2. Hey Andy. Thanx for your reports over the years. I live on the So. Shore (Sierra) but still appreciate your reports. Blessings and Happy One Century to your Pop!!

  3. Congrats to your father on his 100th! It was certainly an honor to attend his 99.5th birthday this summer. For anyone that does not know Ernest, you should take the time to read his book, Chasing Spring. It’s quite a saga of escaping Nazi Germany to come to the United States. Chasing Spring At Amazon

  4. Adding to the conditions report: Sherwood Face skied surprising well this morning after yesterday’s warm afternoon. We also found good snow on Outer Limits and Twilight Zone again. Some groomers are getting quite slick though. The upper part of Sherwood above the return road is absolutely heinous, as is the entrance to Gentian Gulley. I’m sure there are other places to avoid. It’s time for new snow. We’re still looking at 2-4 inches of new snow overnight. Bigger storms still loom on the horizon during the 2nd week of January.
