A Soggy Day

Hello Skiers,

Yesterday the sun was shining and the mountain looked delicious. This morning the winds were blowing and clear water was dropping out of the sky. It was a dreary morning, to say the least, especially after such a beautiful day on Friday. Skiers who grew up in Oregon or Washington do not seem to mind the wet weather.

Not wanting to be called a fair weather skier, I geared up along with a couple of friends and headed out to check conditions on the hill. It was no surprise to find that my gloves and rear end acted as if they were sponges in short order.

What we found were a few groomed areas that skied quite nicely and off piste that was terrible. My opinion of course. Off piste I found a few inches of very wet heavy snow that might have been acceptable to snow boarders but nasty for skiers. It was the kind of snow that does not want let one turn, at least not easily.

We took a couple of runs on Roundhouse which closed down shortly thereafter due to high winds and one on Treeline. I decided that was enough and headed back to the locker room.

We found a new trail cut from the Return Road to Scott Meadow. Note the clear snow falling at the time.

The hope was for rain to turn to snow later in the morning which was the forecast. I did just see a car or two leaving Alpine with a dusting of snow on them. Perhaps tomorrow will be a little drier.

Enjoy your day,
Andy

  1. That low pressure system totally slowed down yesterday, hence the delayed onset of the storm last night. Today it drifted westward ever so slowly, so we were stuck in that warm southwest flow around the low all day. The cold air is hopefully going to make it here tonight and bring some snow. Note that I called that trend at the end of my post yesterday. We did 7 very wet and soggy laps with some extended time drying out in the locker room.

  2. If this is a sign that you will be posting again this year, I applaud you. Really missed the frequent updates and excellent insights into what and why things are as they are. >>applause<<
