Hello Skiers and Riders,
It is snowing lightly along the Truckee River this morning. Our fingers are crossed that it does not turn to rain again. After a weekend of rain on most of the mountain we were somewhat surprised to see better overall coverage on the upper mountain when the sun rose on Monday morning. Unfortunately, the wet nature of the storm and cold overnight temperatures on Sunday turned the entire mountain to solid deadly ice.
Everything trail that was not groomed was closed on Monday morning. Smooth ice began at the edge of the groomed run in Alpine Bowl, which along with Weasel and the beginner area, was all that was available for skiing. This was truly a dangerous condition. It was almost impossible to hold an edge off the groomed. We tried on a rather mellow slope and failed. The groomed areas were actually fine. Nice winter snow, just limited.
I guess Mt. Rose was the place to be over the weekend and on Monday as they did receive a good dumping of snow.
Below Roundhouse Chair we viewed streams running and many sink holes in the middle of a field of snow showing the earth. It was a beautiful sunny clear day to be on the mountain with views in all directions. Hopefully we will receive snow that will stick to the existing conditions so the mountain can re-open for skiing off piste.
A couple of photos are attached showing the improved coverage in Wolverine Bowl that was closed today and the sun reflecting off the icy conditions everywhere that was not groomed.
Enjoy your day,
Andy Wertheim
I’m no avalanche expert but I hope that ice layer goes away before we get any snow on top of it.
I think it will be pretty thoroughly melted as the next front comes in…
