The Weather Models Are All Over The Place

  • by

There’s still a lot of disagreement over exactly what happens for snow totals this week. The CW around Truckee is that this storm is not going to happen, or that snow levels will remain super high. It’s easy to think that since it was 65° in Truckee today.

But the confidence in a late week storm is growing and it’s looking better at the minute. A “Hazardous Weather Outlook” has been issued by NOAA for snow in the Thursday to Saturday time frame. The most recent forecasts are  calling for snow levels as low as 3000 feet. High temps in Truckee are forecast at 33° for Friday and Saturday, approximately a 30 degree difference from today. The official NOAA forecast model is showing roughly 1 to 1.5 inches of liquid in Tahoe for the next 6 days. In normal conditions this would translate into 1 to 1.5 feet of snow for Tahoe.

But over at TahoeWeatherBlog.com, Paul is going further out on a limb. Using the EC model as a guide, Paul says we should see 2-4 inches at the crest, which means this storm would be similar to the one two weeks ago. Here’s the pic, which I believe Paul is getting from an Accuweather Pro account. I know, crazy, right? But that’s what people said about BA’s forecast last time. Paul called roughly the same as BA last time too.

The extended forecast is also looking solid from the EC model, which shows somewhere between 4-6 inches of liquid in the upcoming weeks. This is all a bit further out, so it will require some watching. If you want to check out the full details, i would encourage you to check out Paul’s blog at TahoeWeatherBlog.com.

In the meantime, we’ll wait for BA to get specific on his forecast at TahoeWeatherDiscussion.com. So plan a hike, wash your car again and leave your lawn furniture out…
