Hello skiers & riders,
Clear sunny days continue in Tahoe. Cool nights have allowed the area to continue making snow which is keeping the main runs off Summit and Roundhouse rock free. However, racing down a couple of nicely groomed runs gets old after awhile. I find myself gazing off into the distance wondering if I could make it down D8, Wolverine, North Peril, High Yellow or some other shaded run that is filled with bumps, or even a sunny run that is not completely bare of snow.
Monday we ventured out into Wolverine and found some nice chalky snow in the middle of the bowl on a face that does not get as much sun this time of year as the far north side of the bowl. We skied very slowly turning on the tops of the moguls and gazing into the trough hoping to see any bare spots before sliding down and through them on to the next peak.
I would not say we escaped without touching the hard surfaces of rocks, but we did okay. We also found some nice moguls that were fairly rock free in the lower third of the Face. Yellow trail was a bit more difficult and certainly takes more concentration and perhaps even a slower speed, but it can be negotiated with little damage to the bases. Winter continues to elude us.
There were plenty of road bikers on the pavement this weekend as well as numbers of people hiking and even skating on some of the local lakes.
Enjoy your day,
Andy Wertheim
On Saturday, we counted 54 cars parked at the 5 Lakes Trailhead. That is more than I have ever seen on any summer day….
Snow making? See my post below…just some cursory “maintenance” snow making now.
