Waiting for Snow

Today was another sunny day with relatively warm temperatures. This afternoon, the sky is cloudy, and it is warm. It looks like it might start sprinkling at any moment. Waiting and waiting for snow.

Beaver Bowl 2023 I am waiting for the mountain to look like this photo

The morning corduroy, while it lasted, was quite nice. We sped down Alpine Bowl and Terry’s Return before taking a run over the well-groomed slope in Wolverine. Sunspot offered a good turning surface, as did all the lower slopes accessible from Roundhouse. Although I did not ski off-piste today, I did notice a number of more aggressive skiers on the mountain this morning. There were more people skiing or riding down The Face today than I have seen in a while. This was also true on the Sherwood side of the mountain, where many skiers and riders were maneuvering around and between rocks and patches of brown earth. We did enjoy the groomed slope that ran from Robinhood down and across the Sherwood Run. It continued to the left of the Sherwood Run. This is a path, my friends. I cannot remember ever being groomed. There were slightly fewer patches of dirt, rocks, and treetops on this route down to the base of Sherwood.

I did view a number of skiers on the Sherwood Face as well as a few on Southface.

My guess is that Sun Bowl, Wolverine, and perhaps Beaver Bowl softened in the late morning, giving skiers and boarders some off-piste opportunities. We did take a run on Mountain View from the top of Lakeview, as well as one down Bobby’s Run from the top of Scott. The line at the base of Lakeview was pretty long at 11 am and looked pretty long at the base of Summit just before noon. In my opinion, the warmer temperatures made the skiing better this morning than it was yesterday.

This afternoon, the temperature at the top of Ward Peak is 36 degrees with a 43-mile-per-hour wind that is gusting to 58. Hopefully, this indicates that a change in the weather is coming. I am hearing that we may receive up to 16 inches of snow on Tuesday and Wednesday, and perhaps a good storm will roll through next weekend.

Sometimes adults like to pretend they are kids. Today, there appeared to be something in the air that caused me to try a couple of dumb tricks. My friends did not think I would ski through the rubble amassed just below the road between Summit and Alpine Bowl. The rubble was made up of large multi-sized chunks of snow. There was no reason to ski across this and/or attempt to make a turn in its midst. Of course, I did try and succeeded to a point. One turn and a lot of bouncing around, but I did not fall. On the other hand, we tried to make a turn at the top of the Sherwood Chair with our skis and legs crossed. The left ski was placed on the right side. I was able to stand without moving, but when I started to move and attempted a turn, the ground met up with me. It took assistance to untangle me, while plenty of laughter could be heard from those watching this idiocy. A friend took a picture that I was going to post, but she has not sent it to me as of the time of this post.

Enjoy your day,

Andy

  1. Andee, I am trying to decide if that antic that you took at the top of Sherwood chair with the crossed legs was deliberate or were you trying to be some kind of rad stylin’ skier attempting a pirouette.
Whatever, sure sorry I missed that one.
Let the snow dance begin and finally it looks like a weather change and more fluffy white stuff arriving this week.
Looking forward to those Unofficial Alpine reports.
